Manual Stump Removal Technique

On my place I've removed about a dozen or so Post Oak stumps. I have developed a fairly effective technique that allows me to do this quite efficiently without any serious tools or equipment. My soil is very sandy so this may not apply where you are at. Equipment needed 1. water hose with spray nozzle 2. Digging implements 3. Log chain 4. Truck or tractor to pull on chain with Step 1 Clear the ground around the stump about four feet out from the stump. Step 2 Dig a trench, think moat, about three feet out from the stump. Step 3 Deploy your water hose with spray nozzle. Blast the soil from around the stump into the trench. Step 4 Once you have blasted a good amount of dirt/mud into the trench, shovel it out to a spot close by. Step 5 Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you expose the root ball enough so that you can get a purchase with the log chain on a root or group of roots no larger than the size of your wrist total. Step 6 Attach chain to truck/tractor, pull until roots break, repeat. Note: Usually the only tough root is the taproot, get a purchase on this one as low as you can. Hope this works for you.
